Autumn GreenHouse Gardening

Autumn is a great time for greenhouse gardening, as the cooler temperatures allow for more controlled growing conditions, especially when dealing with seasonal crops. New Zealand’s autumn typically spans from March to May, which means it's the perfect time to plant cool-season crops in a greenhouse and extend the growing season.

Here are some of our tips for autumn greenhouse gardening:

1. Choose the Best Crops for Autumn:

In autumn, the weather starts cooling down, and many vegetables will thrive in these conditions. We love growing:

  • Leafy greens: Lettuce, spinach and kale are excellent choices as they thrive in cooler temperatures and are super versatile to cook with.
  • Root vegetables: Carrots, beetroot, radishes, and turnips grow well in cooler weather and perfect for upcoming winter stews!
  • Brassicas: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts can be started in the greenhouse and harvested later.
  • Herbs: Parsley, coriander, and chives often grow well in autumn temperatures.

2. Maintain Optimal Temperature:

During autumn, temperatures in New Zealand can vary, so you need to ensure your greenhouse is insulated or heated if necessary. Maintaining a steady temperature (usually between 15°C and 22°C for most plants) will encourage healthy growth. Keeping the door shut over night, closing it just before dusk helps to lock in some of that warm air, we love having our Auto Roof Vent Opener to keep our temperatures consistent.

3. Ventilation and Humidity Control:

Ensuring good airflow in your greenhouse to prevent mould and mildew growth is vital, especially during the wet autumn months. Use ventilation systems, such as vents or fans, to circulate air. Proper humidity control will also help prevent common greenhouse issues like damp conditions that can lead to fungal diseases. Clearing out old and dying plants to create space and air flow.

4. Pests and Disease Control:

Even in a greenhouse, pests and diseases can be a concern. Regularly check for aphids, whiteflies, and fungal issues, which can still thrive in autumn conditions. Use organic pest control methods, such as neem oil, or introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs to control pests.

5. Soil Care:

Autumn is a great time to amend the soil in your greenhouse before winter planting. Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and improve its structure. Ensure proper drainage to avoid waterlogging, which can worsen over winter with minimal sunshine and warmth to

6. Winter Preparation:

Autumn is also a good time to prepare your greenhouse for winter temperatures, particularly in regions where frosts are common. Consider adding extra insulation to keep plants warm and minimize the need for external heating. Additionally, make sure to check the structure for any repairs that may be needed before the colder months arrive.
